Module 7 Post: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
There are several competencies learners must have in order to properly and effectively use massive open online courses (MOOCs). MOOCs are best suited for professional development or learners who are at the collegiate level or above, and are looking to continue their education in an accessible, affordable way. Because MOOCs are online resources and courses accessed via the internet, learners must have basic computer and research skills in order to find the type that serves their purpose. For instance, they must be able to use filters to help them create a search to find the type of course they are looking for. MOOCs are a great way to offer knowledge and education to learners if they do not have prior knowledge on a certain topic. That said, learners should have a specific career awareness and acquisition skills prior to signing up for online courses. Without career exploration classes, they may become overwhelmed by the plethora of information and resources they can access with just the click of a button. Having an idea as to what course topic they are interested in will make it easier for learners to utilize and identify MOOCs that best serve their needs.
